Shilluk forms of the Upper Nile, sculpted with clay into monumental crowns, emphasized resilience and communal belonging. Together, these traditions show how our hairstyles function as cultural cartography—mapping identity, memory, and history onto the body. Each braid or lock forms a deliberate geometry, echoing African traditions where hair signifies identity, lineage, and spirituality. Beyond adornment, it embodies resilience and regality, linking personal presentation to collective histories of visibility and power. In its bold form, the hairstyle transforms the head into a living monument.

Tavares Strachan: The Day Tomorrow Began, is the artist’s first museum exhibition in Los Angeles. Strachan is interested in what has been rendered invisible within mainstream narratives, particularly related to the Black diaspora.
