“The Day Tomorrow Began, my exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, includes a series of sculptural works titled In Praise of Midnight. One such work places a full-body cast of an Ife sculpture from West Africa upon the inverted full-body portrait of Pablo Picasso. The sculpture becomes a gesture of reversal, a collision between old and new, African and European, origin and appropriation. Cast in bronze and resin, these works embody collisions across time and geography. They are not about closure but about opening: monuments reimagined as questions, as contradictions, as fragile gestures that honor the complexity of human life. In the quiet hours of midnight, when the old day ends and the new one has not yet begun, these works invite us to dwell in uncertainty—the space where tomorrow begins.”
